- - -> Google Earth file < - -GPS format All files (.zip) [/expandsub2] [/expandsub1][expandsub2 title="TRS Data" expanded="true" findme="auto" scrollonclose="auto"] [/expandsub2] [/expandsub1] [/expand]
I used TRS data (Township Range Section) from historical nest sites to find the corresponding 1/4, and 1/16th sectionsThen I converted these to GPS coord, To aid in 3D mapping and to increase the odds of actually being in the right place in the woods while searching for Goshawk nests. [/expandsub1] [/expandsub2] I converted township and range using this website-> www.earthpoint.us/TownshipsSea… Then I saved each corner coordinate into the excel docto split up the section (~600-800 acres) into quarters (150-200 acres) and 1/16ths (to get around 30-50 acres for each search area) assuming 1/16th section data is known... [/expandsub1] Each Corner Co-ord is inserted into Excel document with formulas Then Each column will calculate 1/4 section (colored backgrounds) and 1/16th section (Corners Each Column, 1/16th section in rows) Make master list with GPS coord's by pasting nearest known location (1/16th section) Coor-d's under the "Coords of section" data , to find each Corner and center

latitudes have positive values to make the math easier (type in a negative into the gps)

Excel may make you paste data as values, right click "123" (pasting 1/16th section coords into excel).

[/expandsub1] I put each coordinate into Google Earth for each site, Center and NW,NE, SW,SE corners   Save all points for a site under a folder with the site name, organize by alpha and /or region Then I can export to google maps or GPS ---Actually I used google to batch import a google spreadsheet to make a kml file that is saved in google earth as a network link (meaning when I update the spreadsheet on my end it automatically updates for you in google earth).--- [/expandsub1] You can use this website to convert .kml or .kmz into .gpx (Which can then be downloaded into a GPS) www.gpsvisualizer.com/ [/expandsub1] Hopefully this will help you to get to the right place at the right time. . .         [/expand]

[/expandsub2]   This Google Earth plugin only seems to work with Firefox or Chrome. After installing I think you need to restart the browser in order for it to be loaded. Do it, it is worth it.   If you only have Internet Explorer I would suggest broadening your horizons or downloading Google Earth and using the .kmz file.   You can try using IE and enable compatibility by going to -> Tools-> Compatibility view settings-> Add-> Close. However this screws up all of the nifty collapsing lists I have going on here... Measuring the Brotherhood Tree

January 2, 2015

Shot with the XPX quad and Silk Gimbal from XProHeli: www.xproheli.com#oid=5_1 Official height: 246 feet. Source: Measuring the Brotherhood Tree – Quadcopter Academy
Very cool footage showing a large tree and climbers as they climb and orbiting the top. Unique perspective that gives non-climbers a sense of what it would be like to climb one of these giants. It also gives me am idea of what it would be like to use a drone to drop a line in a tree for rope access. Ideally a modified small little sling shot or pen gun would launch light weight fishing line with a 4 oz weight would work well. You could use the camera to aim and shoot the line over the branch of your choice and a specific height... also ensures you have enough climbing rope to make the initial ascent.   I am thinking of a smaller version of this with a servo release mechanism... I hope to go through and really explore what each one does, how to use it and show some examples. It is really annoying to update plugins. Be really careful to update them individually or you can end up with a white screen that never loads, locks you out of admin and you have to either ftp to plugin folder and rename it, then login to plugin menu, then rename it back or go to php database and edit the table directly. Then you have to manually reactivate all of them and find the offending plugin one by one.... wow...very slow going.

Falconry Fitness Training

December 21, 2015

[huge_it_videogallery id="1"] It used to be that you would train your bird to come to you by calling to the fist or to a lure and then going hunting. There are many reasons for increased training programs or games, from building a bond, increasing fitness or teaching them a new skill or technique. But there has been some recent improvements with training methods and games. From training a falcon to wait on using a lure, pigeons, kite, balloon, or now a quadcopter. Hawks have been exercised with jump ups, restrained pursuits, yo-yo's, lure machines, lures from moving vehicles and now also using a quadcopter. To do:

December 21, 2015

List of things I am working on currently for the website...

  • Create templates with side bars
    • looks like I have to do that by enabling side bars on the main theme options
    • this changes the page default as well as actually adding the side bars (loading them in php)
    • then choosing individual templates on each page if I don't want them to have sidebars, etc...
  • Go through plugins
    • decide which are important to keep
    • get others as needed
  • Fix FrontPage slider prev next arrows
  • Show post categories dynamically
    • Show on some pages
  • Sort posts into categories
  • Edit content to frontpage
  • Find out how to use links section in wordpress
  • Podcasts in Wordpress?
  • fix footer
  • visual tab not working?
  • add timelines
    • batch add many posts at once? by category? combining multiple categories on one timeline?
    • wordpress.org/support/plugin/t…
    • figured out using shortcode is better than using the timeline url

Adding Custom Fields to a Custom Post Type, the Right Way

January 1, 2016

A tutorial for using the Advanced Custom Fields plugin when building new WordPress custom post types.
Source: Adding Custom Fields to a Custom Post Type, the Right Way This is a great article, but WTF why would no one tell me when you create them, add fields, and then want to view them they will NOT SHOW UP... until you visit the Setting page for permalinks -> /wordpress/wp-admin/options-permalink.php (just visiting the page resets the cache) justintadlock.com/archives/201… The easiest way to fix this is to simply visit your Settings > Permalinks page. You don’t have to save your permalinks but just visit the page. This will flush your rewrite rules. Dear God, that was frustrating! Also do not name the slug with a space in between words... Now I can use templates to display the custom fields I created in the custom "content" type, a.k.a. custom "post" type. good info-> developer.wordpress.org/themes… In my child theme folder .... wordpress.org/support/topic/ad…

updates

January 6, 2016

Adding new functionality and figuring out how to update my site. See the page->To do:

Theme Customization

It was a pain to get rid of some of the footer information but I figured it out using child themes and custom php code.... they definitely don't advertise how to do it.

Page specific CSS

I figured out how to add custom css per page after running into problems with importing things from my old website. Some issues with some of the css sliders I had made used similar tags to some of the elements of the theme, so even if I were to add a custom css file across the whole site it would cause problems. There are several ways to code style sheets specific to each page or post but I found it to be a pain within wordpress without installing a plugin (wp-add-custom-css) while still maintaining the best things about wordpress.

Sliders

I have installed several plugins for sliders: HugeIT, Slider WD, MetaSlider, and Easy FullScreen Slider Timelines I have made a horizontal timeline that has posts by date. aaronsworld.com/timeline/timel… But I don't like that it doesn't show shortcode content just the short codes which looks horrible.

First of all I want one. ;)

Doing a little bit of research it seems that there are 2 drones coming out at the same time from rival companies DJI and 3DR:

Phantom drone

It looks like they are really close, the Phantom 3 now only offers their own camera's and gimbals, and doesn't provide HDMI from the controller but has a longer range (1.2 mi). They have two models the professional (4k) and advanced (1080p).  They have included the lightbridge technology (HD videotransmission) into the P3. While the SOLO has HDMI, reduced range (0.5 mi), external gimbal and cameras (GoPro). The SOLO ends up being more expensive, has a PIXHawk autopilot (compared to NAZA) and 1 GHz computers in both the drone and the controller,  also has an expansion port, and is open source.

Both of them should be out by the end of May, 2015, and we should expect more videos and hands on tests by then.
